It opened in 2004 and connects Antirrio on the north shore with Rio on the Peloponnese, eight kilometers east of Patras.
In the mountains, around 800 meters above sea level, lies the beautiful blue-green Tsivlou Lake at Akrata, which is important for the local ecology.
A relief for navigation is the Corinth Canal, the dividing line between mainland Greece and the Peloponnese.
